Dan Thies on Link Building, Indexing and Big Daddy Update

There has been a lot of discussion on the Big Daddy update, pages being indexed and link building lately. Dan Thies states Big Daddy involves “Google’s new methods of deciding which pages they will crawl and index”.
One of the more important points of his article regards links. This is something I feel many people still do not comprehend.
When a page that links to you is dropped from Google’s index, or moved from the main index to their “supplemental” index, you lose the benefit of that link.
Beyond this, Google is clearly moving toward a system based on trust. Google has different levels of trust for different sites, and for different links.
This means all the time (time = $$$) and energy people have invested in gaining links on low-quality pages probably will not carry much value in Google. Remember time equals money. If you are going to invest time into link building stop looking for short-cuts and aim for long-term results. Focus on obtaining links from sites and pages that will deliver the most link popularity for the longest amount of time.
This is nothing new actually. Many of us in the industry have been talking about this for years.

This was bound to happen, it was just when. That is why links from “authority sites” are usually more effective then links from unknown site.

The “big idea” that I try to spread about link building is that it’s easier if you can stop thinking about SEO for a minute, and look for profitable promotional strategies that also happen to get links. Find ways to make money while building links, and you no longer have to care so much which links are counted.
Writing articles for distribution & syndication has been a very effective way for me to promote myself over the years, for example. I’m sure that some of those links are carrying some juice for SEO, but who cares? I make money on the traffic. If search engines ignored every link in every article, I would still have a reason to do it.

I am also a big fan of giving back to the community. Offer your services for free or discounted to a non-profit organization. Create some kind of contest to sponsor a disadvantage person to help them improve their lives. This works especially well if your market is regional or local. Local media are always looking for uplifting stories. If you work it right you get public relations, brand building, natural links and often indirect sales.
