Link Building Idea

Posted on | November 3, 2005 | 1 Comment

I found this on Myspace.com. People can adopt virtual pets, name and customize them. They then put them on their blog or personal websites. Let’s see how this converts to links in each search engine. Google shows over 6,000, Yahoo over 117,000 and MSN over 200,000. (Of course we know there is no way to get an accurate link count anymore.) At the same time it gives you a clue to the power of this to attract links.

Possible Ideas for your Industry
Travel Industry: Adopt a Jet
Automobile: Adopt a Car
Healthcare: Adopt a Grandparent (this one could be very funny!)
Health: Adopt a Nurse
Clothing: Adopt a Model

Tips
- Make it funny, sexy or both.
- Make sure to write into the program a method so that the anchor text of the link and page it links to are varied. This will make it appear even more natural in your link building campaign.

I adopted a spider this morning and named it Jagger in honor of the current Google update. If you click the “More” button at the bottom a fly (website) will appear. I hope that fly (website) was spam and not collateral damage.

What things have you run across on the web that could be used as a link building campaign?

adopt your own virtual pet!

That is very cool. But I don’t like spiders. Why didn’t you adopt something not so creepy?
