Mike Grehan on Textbook SEO

I found this via SEO Book and Sean Stahlman. Normally I do not repost news, but this article by Mike Grehan is on point. He talk about textbook SEO.
My company’s one of the largest in the industry, if not the largest. If we continue to implement systems and processes that have been predefined as industry standard, yet add nothing to the success ratio of our clients, we have a bleak future.
One response he received on link building
Link building requires a huge shift in the mindset of most of my clients still in the mode of having us “take care of their SEO stuff.” Link building actually means they must get involved, which means lots of overhead and relationship management — each of which calls for a large increase in billable hours. This is not something that my clients are taking very well.
Does Textbook SEO Really Work Anymore?

Clients do need to get involved with a link building campaign. They need to help come up with unique things that they can promote that no one else in their industry is doing. This will help with increase their buzz which usually increases links.

I agree Neil. Generally if the client is involved they end up getting much higher-quality and more natural links.

There must be ongoing participation on the clients part inorder to be successful. Gathering massive amounts of incomming links no longer does the trick. I predict many forms of marketing are going to be combined into the Internet Marketing melting pot in the future.
If an seo does not start blending and using traditional marketing as part of the big picture, I dont see them surviving for more then another year or two.
