Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005

Useit.com just released the Top Ten Web Design Mistakes of 2005. Here are the Top 4 Mistakes…
1. Readability Problems: Wrong font, it was too small or it blends into the background. Hopefully you are not doing all 3!
2. No Standard Linking Practice: Make your links obvious by using a different colors or underlined text. They recommend to “Differentiate visited and unvisited links.” I disagree with this point. In my opinion this makes a website unappealing and often distracting.
3. Flash: Enough said. Only use flash in small sections of your website such as a banners or graphics.
4. Content is Not Written for the Web: I will cover this topic in another post more in-depth. For now here are some great recommendations from UseIt.com. Post it on your office wall.
- Short
- Scannable
- To the point
I have to mention Mistake Number 6 “Browser Incompatibility.” How many sales are lost due to the fact your site does not display or operate correctly in Firefox? Over 90 million people now use Firefox. How many sales are your losing?

I have to say that “Browser Incompatibility” is huge for me. This is number one on my list as I’m on a Mac and use Safari or Firefox. Block me out and I’ll never come back.

I have actually made a blog entry here the other day linking to a thread about the no no’s of design. A lot of it is so common sense, but sometimes we don’t consciously notice what really bothers us about some sites :)
